11. 1.Are there any alternatives to Telabria's plan to use Wi-Max technology?
Yes, there are.
One of the primary delivery technologies which has potential for large scale media distribution is HSPA or High Speed Packet cellular Access.
HSPA is more along the lines of an improvement to services offered by traditional cellular providers.
First generation cellular (1G) refers to those old gigantic cell phones we first carried around in the late 80’s. 2G (second generation) wireless came along as Digital PCS, the more miniaturized digital cell phones that came out a few years later. 3G (third generation) is where we are now, with cell phones beginning to deliver the Internet and other services.
HSPA is viewed as an enhancement of 3G technology.
Though it takes investment in planting cell phone towers, it doubles both for providing internet and provide cellular services. The towers can also be rented to others to gain extra profit.
Another alternative called FLASH OFDM (Fast-hopping Low-latency Access with Seamless Handover Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is a new concept which is best suited for bringing wireless internet to rural folks.
FLASH OFDM is a wireless technology that makes use of the 450MHz frequency spectrum, and is able to cover a distance of up to 70km.
2. Why should Telabria pay for WiMax receivers? Is this a good strategy?
Yes it is a good strategy.
More customers, more profit. Providing more services at a lesser price is more important in having more customers. Wi-Max receivers given away free to customers is also a good advertisement in grabbing more customers than make them choose the competitor.
Though $349 cap looks more, there are more chances in competing with the other providers in giving away free receivers. And also established players always have an edge against the newer ones.
To make it more profitable it could offer the customers to provide free wi-max receivers upon a fixed term of connection.
